Triclabendazole 250 Mg is the treatment of choice for human fascioliasis, a parasitic infection caused by liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. These parasites primarily affect the liver and bile ducts and are commonly transmitted through consumption of contaminated water or raw aquatic plants. Fascioliasis is prevalent in many parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where livestock farming is widespread.
One of the key advantages of triclabendazole is its high effectiveness against both immature and adult liver flukes. Unlike many other antiparasitic drugs that act only on adult parasites, triclabendazole targets all stages of Fasciola species, making it particularly valuable in early and chronic infections. This broad activity significantly improves treatment outcomes and reduces the risk of long-term liver damage.
Triclabendazole works by disrupting the parasite’s energy metabolism and structural integrity, leading to paralysis and death of the flukes. After administration, the drug is well absorbed and metabolized in the liver into active sulfoxide and sulfone metabolites, which enhance its antiparasitic action within the bile ducts where the flukes reside.
For human fascioliasis, triclabendazole is usually prescribed as a single oral dose of 10 mg/kg, or in some cases, two doses given 12 hours apart, depending on disease severity and medical guidance. The medication is generally well tolerated, with mild side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, headache, or dizziness, often related to the dying parasites rather than the drug itself.
In conclusion, triclabendazole 250 mg remains the gold standard therapy for human fascioliasis due to its proven efficacy, safety, and ability to eliminate liver flukes at all developmental stages. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment with triclabendazole are essential to prevent complications such as biliary obstruction, fibrosis, and chronic liver disease.
